Diabetes Cure? Maybe.
No, there isn’t a cure just yet but maybe soon. The New Scientist reported a few days ago the results of a Brazilian Stem Cell Treatment. Twelve of the twenty participants are now insulin free. The stem cell testing process only works with Type 1 Diabetics but it’s just one more option that leaves diabetics hopeful.
There remain a few small problems with this type of treatment though. 9 of the 20 men that went through this treatment are now infertile. Umm, what? That’s kind of a big deal. Maybe that should be at the top of the article. If I had to choose between making my little swimmers non-swimmable or curing diabetes what would I pick? Sure, I could freeze my little Michael Phelps’, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I know I’m new to this whole Diabetes thing but shooting myself with insulin everyday is kind of annoying. Besides, if I can partake in a treatment that would eventually lead to curing Type 1 Diabetes, I would feel honored.
The other problem is that the FDA would probably never approve such a treatment. Diabetics are cash cows. As of 2007 there are 23.6 million people with Diabetes and with each one of them spending money on insulin, pumps, glucose monitors, etc… someone is making a shit ton of money out there. If Diabetes was cured tons of jobs would be lost. The United States wouldn’t approve a Stem Cell test or study like this. That’s why I would probably have to go to Europe or Canada to participate.
I think as it stands right now I would probably participate in the study. One step closer to curing Diabetes might be worth a low sperm count. I would definitely freeze my little swimmers Walt Disney style. The side effects could certainly be worse right? You’ve seen those depressing medication commercials that say “Side Effects May Include: Possibility of Death, Anal Leakage, Growing a third or even fourth nipple, etc…”. I’ll take a low sperm count over any of those, any day. Which brings me to a statement which everyone should live by.
Low Sperm Count > Anal Leakage > Death
